Health program information

Our 12-Week Health Program gives you one-on-one consultations with three health professionals: a pharmacist, dietitian, and exercise physiologist. They’ll work with you to design a personalised nutrition and exercise plan that is tailored to your needs. It will help you make long-term changes to your lifestyle, so you can improve your health, fitness and overall wellbeing.

What do I get

You’ll meet regularly with your pharmacist, dietitian and exercise physiologist. In total, you’ll have nine appointments over the 12 weeks - three with each health professional. Over the 12 weeks, you’ll receive:

  • A health and fitness assessment;
  • Personalised eating recommendations;
  • Personalised activity recommendations;
  • Advice, motivation and support; and
  • A starter pack with a towel and water bottle.

How much does it cost

The 12-week Health Program costs $395, payable on your first appointment. If you’re an eligible HBF member, you may be able to claim a benefit on this program, find out more.

Can I join the program

Most people aged 18 or over can join our 12-Week Health Program. There are some people that the program may not be suitable for, such as pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. Frequently Asked Questions (Before Program)

1. How do I know if I am eligible for the program?

You can book a free 15 minute appointment with your Friendlies pharmacist who will provide you with an overview of the program and also determine if you are eligible. To be eligible you must:

  • Be 18 years or over
  • Not currently pregnant or breastfeeding

Please note we strongly advise you to consult with your doctor if you have any concerns about your health before you sign up for the health program.

2. What is the program schedule?

The program schedule is:

  • Weeks 1 to 4 – First consultation with your pharmacist, dietitian and exercise physiologist.
  • Weeks 5 to 8 – Second consultation with your pharmacist, dietitian and exercise physiologist.
  • Weeks 9 to 12 – Third consultation with your dietitian and exercise physiologist. Your program ends with your final pharmacist consultation.

3. Are there any additional costs as part of the program?

There are no further charges associated with the program. You may choose to purchase products or services that complement the program from the pharmacy or other health professionals but this is up to you.

4. Is this program for weight loss only?

No, this program is a health program designed to help with your personal health goals which may or may not be weight focused. The team of health professionals will tailor the program based on your individual needs.

5. Do I have to go to the same dietitian and exercise physiologist for the full 12 weeks?

Yes, this will ensure information is carried over between appointments and stays consistent so you’ll receive the best results from the program.

6. Can I still do this program if I have a serious health condition or injury?

Please note we strongly advise you to consult with your doctor if you have any concerns about your health before you sign up for the health program.

7. Can I use meal replacement products as part of this program?

No, meal replacement products are not part of this program. This program aims to help you develop healthy behaviours to better manage your health long term.

8. What are my payment options?

You can pay by EFTPOS, credit card or cash.

9. What is an accredited exercise physiologist (AEP)?

AEPs are university trained health professionals who specialise in clinical exercise interventions for individuals at high-risk of developing, or with existing chronic and complex medical conditions and injuries. These interventions are provided by exercise delivery including health and physical activity education, advice and support, and lifestyle modification with a strong focus on achieving behavioural change. AEPs are recognised allied health professionals displaying a diverse range of knowledge and skills to help prevent or manage chronic disease or injury, and assist in restoring your optimal physical function, health or wellness.

10. What is the difference between an AEP and a personal trainer?

AEPs must have completed a four-year university degree including 500 clinical hours and are experts in chronic disease management and prevention. Exercise physiologists are also registered with Medicare and health funds, Veteran Affairs and work cover.

Personal trainers can obtain a qualification with a 6-8 week course or 1 year diploma which provides them with a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology and exercise prescription. Personal trainers are not qualified to work with people with medium to serious health complications.

Personal trainers are not registered with other organisations for benefit payments.

11. What is an accredited practising dietitian (APD)?

APDs have obtained university qualifications accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia. They undertake ongoing training and education to keep up to date with advances in health and food sciences, and comply with the Association’s guidelines for best practice.

Dietitians apply the art and science of human nutrition to help people understand the relationship between food and health and make dietary choices to attain and maintain a healthy lifestyle, and to prevent and treat illness and disease. Dietitians are health professionals who use their expertise in nutrition to promote and improve health and to assist in the prevention and treatment of diseases in individuals and communities.

12. What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

Both nutritionists and dietitians aim to assist in a person’s journey to reaching optimal health through food and nutrition. The main difference between the two professions is that only a dietitian (with an accreditation from the Dietitians Association of Australia) is qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy or clinical nutrition appointments in either an individual or group setting.

13. Is there a Medicare rebate?

There are no Medicare rebates available for the services provided as part of this program.

14. Can I get a refund once I have paid for the program?

No refunds are available once you have started the program. Please discuss the suitability of the program with the pharmacist prior to starting to ensure it is right for you.

15. Do I need to be weighed if I don’t want to?

This program will be individually tailored to meet your needs and assist you to achieve your personal health goals.

There are other measurements that will be taken over the 12 weeks which you can use to monitor your progress including your waist circumference, or you may wish to just focus on your physical ability assessment or other measurements. This can be discussed with your pharmacist during your sign up appointment.

16. Is the dietitian going to put me on a diet?

Your dietitian will help you implement healthy lifestyle choices and work with you to ensure their recommendations fit in with your likes/dislikes and more importantly your lifestyle. All recommendations made will be based on the Australian Dietary Guidelines. The program does not encourage the removal of any major food groups.

  • Take your health program folder to all of your appointments

If you are having any difficulties then we recommend you contact your pharmacist, as they are there to guide and support you through the program.

2. What happens if I become ill or injured during the program? Can I suspend the program and return to finish later?

To achieve the best results it’s recommended that you follow the timetable for the program. If you need to delay the completion of the program due to unforeseen circumstances, speak to your pharmacist about preparing an alternative timetable.

3. What do I need to bring to my sign up appointment?

For your first appointment please bring along any information relevant to your medical history including a list of your current medications.

Also bring along your diary/calendar so that you can book in future appointments.

4. What do I bring to my appointments?

Bring your health program folder to all appointments and any other documentation as requested by your team of health professionals.

5. Do I have to go to the same dietitian and exercise physiologist for the full 12 weeks?

Yes, this will ensure information is carried over between appointments and stays consistent so you’ll receive the best results from the program.

6. How do I cancel an appointment?

You will need to contact the health professional that you have the appointment with, a cancellation fee may apply dependant on the health professionals cancellation policy.

7. What if I forget to bring my health program folder to my appointments?

We strongly recommend that you bring your health program folder with you to every appointment as this will ensure your progress can be clearly tracked.

If you forget your health program folder the information will be recorded on a separate document and you will be able to insert it into your health program folder before your next appointment.

8. What if I misplace my health program folder?

A replacement folder may be provided however if you misplace your health program folder you will lose the information necessary to track your progress and gain the most benefit out of the program. We will have some of your relevant information documented but not all of the detail that is included in your health program folder.

9. What information will be collected throughout the program?

Information such as your measurements, goals and progress will be collected for you in your health program folder, which you will need to bring to all of your appointments.

You will receive a consent form at your first appointment which will outline how your data will be stored and used for the program which you will need to sign and a copy of this will be kept by your pharmacist.

No information will be provided to or shared with your doctor.

10. What if I can’t get an appointment with my provider in the specified week?

Your initial dietitian and exercise physiologist appointments will be booked during your sign up appointment with your pharmacist. You can also book in all your pharmacy appointments at this appointment. When you have your first appointment with your dietitian and exercise physiologist you can book in your next two appointments with them and they will need to be recorded in your folder.

If you cannot book your appointments in the specified week you may either:

  1. Try a different provider as advised by your pharmacist however you will need to commit to seeing the same provider during the 12 week program or,
  2. Make a booking one week either side of the specified week however you will still need to follow the program schedule for all other appointments.

11. What happens after the 12 weeks is up?

Following the 12 week program you may be referred onto HBF and other external programs to assist you with your progress and the continuation with your positive behaviour changes.

You may decide to continue to use the services provided by your dietitian and exercise physiologist following the 12 week period. The cost of these appointments will be explained by your dietitian or exercise physiologist and are not part of the program cost.
